It is safe to say that Huntington Park is a hidden gem in Newport News. This park is located near the intersection of Warwick and Mercury boulevards, is nestled at the base of the James River Bridge. It spans 60 acres, making it the 4th largest park in Newport News. Best of all, this park is very unique in the fact that includes a beach, museum, a rose garden (also a great outdoor wedding venue), and a playground! From play dates to romantic dates, Huntington Park has something for everyone. Here are some of the wonderful features awaiting you in Huntington Park:
1. The Virginia War Museum
The park is home to the Virginia War Museum, filled with displays of military artifacts from the Revolutionary War to the present. There are also a number of items exhibited outside of the museum and throughout the park.
2. Memorials of remembrance of the Vietnam War, Holocaust and More
A quiet space with memorials in remembrance of the Vietnam War, the Holocaust, and the Four Chaplains of the USAT Dorchester can also be found outside of the Virginia War Museum.
3. The Huntington Park Rose Garden
The Huntington Park Rose Garden, a beautifully landscaped area complete with a scenic gazebo, is located near the Warwick Boulevard entrance.
4. It's not just a park, it has a beach, too!
A public beach with a designated swimming area is staffed with a lifeguard from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A beach concession stand that serves snow cones, ice cream, and other fun food, is also open during this time. The beach also has volleyball nets, so bring your own ball!
5. The James River Fishing Pier
The James River Fishing Pier gives you the opportunity to fish from one of the longest saltwater fishing piers on the East Coast!
Lake Biggins, a large freshwater lake located in the park, has a children’s fishing pier that extends out into the lake.
6. Fort Fun Playground
Fort Fun, a 14,000-square-foot playground, is located on a scenic bluff overlooking the James River. Two picnic shelters are available for rent on the bluff near Fort Fun, and it’s worth noting that the view is spectacular during the late evening hours.
7. Boat Access
A public boat ramp, with dedicated parking, is open year round.
8. The Huntington Park Tennis Center
The Huntington Park Tennis Center consists of 20 courts. Classes and clinics are available for all ages and skill levels, and the courts are lighted for use at night.
9. A Place to Play Ball
There are two ball fields located in the park, along with a basketball court.
10. A Delicious Seafood Restaurant with Water Views
The Crab Shack on the James, a restaurant specializing in fresh seafood, is also found in the park. It offers waterfront dining with a sweeping panoramic view of the James River.
11. The Best Sunsets
And, finally, the most gorgeous sunsets on the James River can be found at Huntington Park. Huntington Park has two convenient entrances: One is at Hornet Circle and Warwick Boulevard and the other is at River Road and Mercury Boulevard, the last stop before the James River Bridge. It is open daily, from sunrise to sunset.
