‘Tis the season for dazzling lights, festive markets, & family fun!

The holiday season sparkles a little brighter in Newport News. With dazzling light displays, seasonal performances, bustling Christmas markets, and joyful family celebrations, the city offers something for everyone. Whether you call it home or are visiting for the season, you’ll find plenty of ways to make merry memories here.

Holiday Markets & Family Fun

Kick off the season at the German Christmas Market at City Center at Oyster Point. This annual event brings the charm of a European village to Virginia with artisan vendors, handmade crafts, and mouthwatering treats like pretzels, bratwurst, and warm mulled cider. Wander through decorated stalls, pick up unique gifts, and enjoy live music and children’s activities surrounded by sparkling lights.

Before or after your market visit, grab a bite at Chef’s Market & Food Hall, featuring local favorites perfect for a cozy lunch or quick snack. Families can also stop by Cure Coffeehouse for a warm drink or pastry, a welcoming pause filled with the scent of fresh coffee and house-made treats.

Tree Lighting & Evening Celebrations

The Port Warwick Holiday Tree Lighting on November 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. brings music, dance, Santa’s arrival, and spirited fun for locals and visitors. The celebrations continue the following week with the city’s Tree Lighting Ceremony, one of Newport News’ most beloved traditions. On December 6 from 5 to 9 p.m., enjoy this free event as the city’s towering holiday tree comes to life in a spectacular display of color, complete with live entertainment, carolers, and the dazzling NlightN light installations. Eventgoers can sip hot cocoa, snap photos with Santa, and take in the festive glow throughout the evening.

Parking is free, but plan to arrive early to grab a good viewing spot, and don’t forget your mittens. The event takes place outdoors, rain or shine.

Drive-Through Light Displays

No holiday here is complete without a visit to Celebration in Lights at Newport News Park, Virginia’s first and longest-running drive-through holiday light event. Now in its 33rd season, the display features more than one million lights and over 350 animated scenes along a dazzling two-mile route through the park’s wooded landscape.

The display runs from November 27 through January 1, with admission available by car or bus. To avoid crowds, plan your visit on a weekday evening early in the season. Bring snacks, tune your radio to cheerful tunes, and enjoy the ride; it’s a magical experience for kids and adults alike.

Holiday Music & Performances

Celebrate the season with two unforgettable performances by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. On December 11 at 7:30 p.m., the beloved Holiday POPS! concert will fill the air with classic carols and modern holiday hits, featuring the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Virginia Children’s Chorus, and Earl Bynum & The Mount Unity Choir, led by Robert Shoup.

Then, on December 20 at 2:30 p.m., experience the majesty of Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Music Director Eric Jacobsen, a timeless masterpiece highlighted by the soaring “Hallelujah” chorus.
