The 1862 Battle of the Ironclads, which took place off the coast of Newport News, changed the course of history and revolutionized the way ships are built today. Business tycoon, Collis P. Huntington, started Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in 1886, creating the birthplace of modern shipbuilding and producing nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines. Newport News Shipbuilding has built many of the U.S. super aircraft carriers, including the Enterprise, Kennedy, Washington, Vinson and Roosevelt.
