How do I get to the Newport News Visitor Center?

- From I-64, take Exit 250B, VA Route 105 E/ Ft. Eustis Blvd./ Yorktown.
- At the bottom of the exit ramp, take a left onto Jefferson Avenue (continue approx. 0.3 miles).
- Turn right at the entrance to Newport News Park and the Visitor Center will be immediately on the left.

When is the Newport News Visitor Center open?
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. (Note: The Visitor Center may close early on Christmas Eve).

Where did Newport News get its name?
No one knows for sure where Newport News got its name, but "Newportes Newes" first appears in the Virginia Company records in 1619, making it one of the oldest place names in the New World. The most widely accepted folktale is that our city is the namesake of Captain Christopher Newport, commander of the Susan Constant, which was the flagship of the three-ship English fleet that landed on Jamestown Island in 1607. He made several voyages to Newport News in the early days of the Jamestown Colony, bringing "good news" of supplies and settlers.

Newport News Shipbuilding is located at 4101 Washington Ave., Newport News, VA 23607. Due to security restrictions, tours of the shipyard are not available. Ships can be viewed from Victory Landing Park, along the waterfront in downtown Newport News. Currently, Newport News has two full-service hotels, with the largest meeting space at the Newport News Marriott at City Center and the other is the Holiday Inn Newport News-Hampton. None. Newport News became an independent city in 1896. In 1958, the city merged with Warwick County and is currently 69 square miles, with a population of 186,247 (2020 Census Bureau).
Where can I rent boats and get a shoreline fishing permit in Newport News?
Jon boat, canoe and paddleboat rentals are available at the Newport News Park Campsite Office, located at 13564 Jefferson Avenue. Kayaks and Jon Boats can also be rented at The Mariner's Lake.
