Accessible Parks and Attractions
- Deer Park: The Boundless Playground at Deer Park is designed to be 70% accessible for children with disabilities. As the first barrier-free playground in Newport News, the play area includes handicap swings designed with high back support and seat belts; a picnic table under the shelter designed for wheelchair access; rubber surfacing and asphalt walkways; and a play panel installed for wheelchair accessibility.
- Newport News Park: One of the largest municipal parks in the country, Newport News Park features accessible trails, picnic areas, and restrooms. The Discovery Center offers accessible exhibits and programs for visitors of all abilities.
- Huntington Park: This park includes accessible parking, restrooms, and easy-to-navigate paths, making it perfect for a relaxing day out. The Fort Fun playground is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to children of all abilities.
- Victory Landing Park: Enjoy stunning waterfront views with accessible pathways and facilities, ensuring everyone can appreciate the beauty of the James River.
- Noland Trail: While the entire trail may not be suitable for all abilities, accessible sections and viewing areas allow visitors to enjoy the natural beauty and serene environment.
- Riverview Farm Park: With accessible parking, restrooms, and pathways, this park provides a fantastic setting for picnics, sports, and family gatherings.
Accessible Museums
- The Mariners' Museum: This world-class maritime museum offers accessible parking, entrances, and exhibits. Enjoy a wide range of exhibits and programs designed to be inclusive for all visitors.
- Virginia Living Museum: Discover Virginia's natural heritage with accessible exhibits, trails, and facilities. The museum offers a variety of interactive exhibits and programs suitable for visitors of all abilities.
Accessible Transportation
As part of our commitment to making Newport News inclusive and accessible for all visitors, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has reintroduced its OnDemand microtransit service. This wheelchair-accessible ridesharing service provides an affordable and convenient transportation option, particularly for those in areas with limited fixed-route bus service or who need a first- or last-leg solution for their trips.
The service operates within a 20-square-mile zone in Newport News, with a fleet of branded wheelchair-accessible Chrysler minivans. Riders can book a trip through the HRT OnDemand app or by calling (757) 859-8294. The service is available Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Vehicles arrive within 15 minutes of booking and transport riders between key points of interest, such as hospitals, universities, and transportation hubs.
