Newport News, VA, Dec. 9, 2024 – The voices of Newport News residents are taking center stage in Truth Be Told: Newport News, a podcast dedicated to sharing the untold stories of historically Black neighborhoods. Produced by Jackie Glass and Hannah Sobol, the series on Newport News marks the conclusion of a four-city audio tour that also featured Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Portsmouth.
Each of the six episodes captures a deeply personal narrative, highlighting the challenges, triumphs, and cultural legacies that shape Newport News. These stories delve into themes of adversity, resilience, pride, and community, connecting audiences across generations and backgrounds.
“By amplifying these voices, we’re not only honoring the past but also fostering a greater understanding of the present,” say the podcast’s creators. “These stories help us walk history forward.”

The Newport News podcasts were unveiled Nov. 21 at a “Launch & Listen” reception held at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center. Truth Be Told was made possible by a grant from the Virginia African American Cultural Center through the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
