The Virginia International Tattoo is one of the largest military music and performance events in the world, and nearby Norfolk is honored to host it again in 2025. This year, the annual event will feature over 800 performers from across the globe, including military bands, drill teams, cultural performers, and dancers, in a tribute of patriotism and international goodwill.

The name "tattoo" comes from a 17th-century European tradition when innkeepers signaled soldiers to return to their barracks by playing fifes and drums, calling “Doe den tap toe!”—or “Turn off the taps!” Today, this historic tradition lives on through the Virginia International Tattoo, blending history, precision, and artistry into a celebration of music and movement.

Since Norfolk has proudly hosted this event as part of the Virginia Arts Festival since 1997, we’ve got all the tips you need to make it an unforgettable experience for you and your family—plus great ways to enjoy Newport News during the beautiful spring season.
